Pick n Pay: Building the retail business of the future with SAP CAR POSDTA


 

The Pick n Pay Group is one of Africa’s largest and most consistently successful retailers in the fast-moving consumer goods industry. The company started as a family business in 1967 with four small stores in the Western Cape, and now operates through multiple store formats under three brands – Pick n Pay, Boxer, and TM – and has one of the largest online grocery marketplaces in Africa.

Pick n Pay currently has over 2,000 stores, including hypermarkets, supermarkets, and franchised family stores.

Opportunity background
In late 2020, SAP, Beyond Technologies and Pick n Pay started conversations about their application landscape required to support initiatives identified by Pick n Pay’s IT and business departments. As one of Africa’s most prominent retailers, the company experienced growing customer demand year-over-year and sought to eliminate any transaction delays and inventory inefficiencies. Specifically, Pick n Pay was looking to:

  •  Speed up processing and reconciliation of high transaction volumes (over 30 billion)
  • Take their inventory management capabilities to the next level
  • Simplify and streamline financial and administrative reporting

Building a future-ready applications environment
Pick n Pay currently runs SAP ECC 6 EHP 5 and was looking to adopt SAP’s reference architecture.

The company selected SAP CAR as the replacement platform for their previous SAP POSDM application. Based on its extensive retail expertise, Beyond Technologies was selected to implement SAP CAR with focus on POSDTA and the required master data to drive an effective replacement of POSDM.

Beyond Technologies also helped develop their reconciliation solution leveraging standardized CDS views that improved the creation of files for third parties and sped up the rate at which Pick n Pay is now able to create/add new reconciliation files to their landscape.

The goal of the POSDTA project was not only to focus on a technical upgrade/migration, but to set up the foundation for future growth with SAP CAR and its consuming applications.

As a result of Pick n Pay’s journey from POSDM to SAP CAR POSDTA, the company recently saw an upsurge in sales and profits, thanks to the solution’s host of value-driven features, including:

  • Accurate, real-time data and analytics
  • Enhanced, up-to-date stock management and a centralized overview of inventory
  • Optimized, one-click administrative and financial reporting
